The Social Security and Supplemental Security Income Disability programs are the largest federal programs that provide assistance to people with disabilities. Only individuals who have become disabled and meet certain medical criteria can qualify to receive benefits under either program.
The difference between the two programs are as follows:
Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) pays benefits to you and certain members of your family if you have become disabled and have worked long enough and paid Social Security taxes throughout your life. Consider the following information in regards to your work history to determine if you may be eligible to receive SSDI benefits:
- Before age 28 – you need one and a half years of work
- Age 38 – four years of work
- Age 46 – six years of work
- Age 54 – eight years of work
- Age 60 – nine and a half years of work
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) pays benefits to people based on their financial need.
To qualify for SSI you must be either:
- Age 65 or older
- Blind
- Disabled
- A child that is blind or disabled. There is a listing of impairments that applies to children.
- Have no income and few resources
